Feedback from SustPack2016 and the Australian Institute of Packaging national conferences

After taking over the leading streamlined LCA tool for the packaging sector, PIQET, in April, lifecycles has been busily attending packaging industry conferences and engaging with our client base to get a handle on the big sustainability issues the industry is facing. Our challenge: imagine how PIQET can help companies improve their environmental impact and add value to the bottom line.

At both SustPack2016 in Chicago in April, and the Australian Industry of Packaging national conference  in Melbourne in June, some clear messages are coming out:

– Demand for “sustainability” is slowing down- customers won’t pay more for it, however they do expect good performance. Tough market!
– Food packaging needs to re-market itself as a sustainability enabler, as food waste is recognised as a giant issue. Can yesterdays’ villains be the answer to an even bigger problem?
– Recyclability is a major challenge, but does it stifle innovation?

It was great to see clients such as Mars and Frucor speaking about their activities at these events.
